AT&T 'hotter,' passes T-Mobile USA with 48,000 hot spots

AT&T Inc. has substantially expanded its network of Wi-Fi hot spots, adding 13,000 new locations around the world for more than 48,000 total. That figure surpasses the roughly 45,000 Wi-Fi hot spots of T-Mobile USA Inc., which has traditionally been a leader in the space.

According to T-Mobile USA’s Web site, the carrier has about 8,370 hot spots in the United States and an additional 37,000 locations overseas for roaming. AT&T says it now has nearly 15,000 hot spots in the U.S., close to double the number offered by T-Mobile USA.

T-Mobile USA’s hot spot locations include Starbucks coffee shops, Borders Books and Music stores, airline clubs and hotels including Red Roof Inns, Hyatt Hotels and Resorts, and Sofitel and Novotel Hotels, as well as various airports.

AT&T, meanwhile, specified that its service is offered at airports, restaurants, coffee shops and hospitals including the UC Davis Health System in California and the Central Dupage Hospital in Illinois; several Juan Valdez Cafes in New York, Washington, D.C., and Seattle; and the Addison conference and theatre centre in Texas.

Wasn't T-mobile losing money of their Hot Spots for a while? I still don't see how they are that great...but I'll probably end up using them during college. Now that Cingular is Att...are they going to start trying to undercut T-mobile?

T-Mobile will dump wifi eventally, while the free hotspots are all around
this is money-losing business
forcing total internet users to pay $10-20 more for something they can't/will never use is too money-hungry, and stupid

Is it me or does AT&T too many services, or does this post belong in the paranoia thread?

There should be a new Treo coming to Sprint in the next couple of months. We shall see. I'm holding out for a more capable Sprint PDA, but we shall see....
